Proportion matters - A small muscle that can make a big difference

bodybuilding tip weightlifting tip weight training calves

One of the most neglected body parts of bodybuilders and recreational weightlifters are the calves. Most bodybuilding routines simply do not include the gastrocnemius, calves as part of their workout.

Even though it is a relatively small muscle well developed calves make a big difference. In bodybuilding proportion is just as important as size. There is nothing funnier then a huge chest and no legs. So work those calves and look like a bodybuilder not a mussel head.

A few tips to help build impressive calves.

The best way to target the different heads of your gastrocnemius is not by angling your feet, but changing their position. Use wide and narrow stances instead and achieve much better results. Take a wide stance. For wide stances your feet should be slightly wider than shoulder width. This will force you to rise up on your big toes, transferring most of the resistance to your inner calves. A narrow stance is about shoulder width or slightly narrower. Take this stance and you to rise on the outside of your feet, stressing the outer head of the calves.

Try these variations on all your favourite calf exercises.
