Taking a protein supplement is necessary for a serious body builder and weight trainer, but how do you know what to buy. There are protein powders geared for fat loss, for muscle maintenance, for sports performance, and for muscle building, which is best for you and your needs?
For most Price may be the biggest factor.
Expect a higher quality protein to cost more money than one of lower quality. I find that you are looking at $1 per 20 grams of protein.
There is different quality in each manufacture.
Whey protein concentrate can be a good source of whey protein, but often contains more fat and lactose than whey protein isolate. Ion exchange isolate starts out as concentrate, but then ends up as an isolate after a machine process that helps get more protein per serving, but reduces some of the important peptides. Hydrolyzed protein is in my opinion the best. It is already broken down which means it will be digested much faster making it the best for your post workout supplementation.

Each protein powder can have a different purpose. Looking for a meal replacement, you may look for it to have lots of extra nutrients. If you are in search of a weight gainer look for more fat and slow burring carbs and more calories. Whey protein is best used for post workout and in the morning. Micellar casein digests the slowest, therefore makes it a good choice before bed. Have a goal in mind when in search of the right powder.

Mixability
Most powders now mix fairly well so you should not have much problem here. Protein that is instantized will mix best.
