Do you give good spots?

Just a few quick notes on spots.
This is not just for new people in the gym, veteran lifters need to a look at this too. A spotter is very important and at times essential to a weightlifters training. A spotter is there to offer encouragement, help with missed reps and most important ensure the safty of the lifter.
When spotting a person using dumbbells spot as close to the dumbbell as possible. In some cases the weight itself will be where the spotter places their hands.
I see many who spot dumbbell flat, incline, decline, shoulder and all the other presses from the elbows. This practice can be very dangerous.
A few reason that spotting at the elbows is not advisable.
1. often the force is applied inwards as apposed to upwards forcing an unnatural or unwanted range of motion
2. no support is provided for lateral movement of the dumbbell,
that is to say the dumbbells can fall in any direction depending on which way the elbow loses control
Remember always spot as close to the weight as possible. In most cases this will be at the wrists, other times it will be the weight itself. As a spotter your main objective to protect the litter and yourself from injury and the best way to do this is from a position with the most control.

All the best in your weight and programs.
